THE PRIZE

We're thrilled to announce the Longlist, Shortlist, and winner of the Bad Form Young Writers' Prize!

Congratulations go to Casey Paul, who won with an extract from her manuscript 'The Docks'.

The Prize was very hotly contested, and it made the decision to pick just three for the Shortlist very difficult for the judges, let alone a winner. As such, we decided to create a Longlist of writers who deserved further recognition for their work.

The judges were:

- Amy Baxter, founder and editor of Bad Form, editorial assistant at Penguin Michael Joseph

- Sophie Marie Niang, a Black feminist researcher working on Blackness in Europe, and the host of The Big Sleep podcast.

- Dr Alessandra Bassey, a published researcher, lecturer, and co-editor of Literandra.

- Akaninyene Bassey, board member at the Centre of Pan-African Thought, and co-editor of Literandra.

Longlisted writers will receive one-to-one feedback from the Fiction Editorial Team at Penguin Michael Joseph.

All three of the Shortlisted writers will receive one-to-one feedback from the Fiction Editorial Team at Penguin. The two runners' up will receive individual feedback from a published author; one from Umi Sinha, and the other from Elaine Chiew. One of the runners up will also receive tickets to Writing Our Legacy Creative Writing Events.

The winner was picked from our Shortlist, and as well as a huge pile of books given by a number of publishers, and tickets to Writing Our Legacy events, will receive meetings with:

  • Agent Catherine Cho of Madeleine Milburn Agency

  • Publisher Joel Richardson of Penguin Michael Joseph

  • Author Okechukwu Nzelu, author of The Private Joys of Nnenna Maloney (Dialogue Books).
